About Kira Morgan's latest novel: "In 16th century Scotland, young Miss Florie Gilder runs away from her drunken foster father to find her real father and her noble heritage. Along the way, she is accused of theft, becomes a fugitive hiding in a forest, and is accidentally wounded by a handsome local huntsman. The huntsman--a Robin-Hood figure who poaches wild game from the landowner's estate to feed the starving poor--carries the beautiful maiden to a church where she is guaranteed 40 days of sanctuary from the law. During that time, he learns her true story, falls in love with her, and helps her in her quest, at the risk of his own life. Smitten with him, she worries more for his survival. But enemies of the state are seeking to overturn the Catholic royals, while a vicious noblewoman is out to destroy Florie."

Dear Friends, Fans, and Family,
Did you ever stud an orange with cloves to make a sweet-smelling pomander? Pomanders were especially popular in the Renaissance. In fact, people liked these personal air fresheners so much that they began filling perforated balls of gold or silver with solid perfume to wear as jewelry from their belts. The word "pomander" comes from the French expression, pomme d'ambre, which means apple of amber (ambergris was a commonly used scent). Pomanders were sometimes filled with sponges soaked in fragrant vinegar, but more often they contained solid wax balls of scent. Elaborate models were encrusted with gems, and one famous pomander was crafted to look like an orange, with each section containing its own scent.
In my next book, CAPTURED BY DESIRE, the gold pomander that Florie Gilder refuses to surrender contains the key to her future and the secret to her past. See if you can solve the mystery!

Dear Friends, Fans, and Family ~
Most of us are familiar with the concept of seeking asylum in a church, but did you know that in medieval times there was a whole set of complex rules for claiming sanctuary? To our modern ears, it sounds more like hide-and-seek-asylum! Basically, outlaws had to flee to a church before they could be captured, where they had to a) ring a bell, b) hold a door-knocker, or c) sit on a special stone seat called a fridstool. Once there, they had to confess to the priest, agree to turn over any sharp weapons, and promise to help put out any fires that might occur. After 40 days (during which they might or might not receive food), they could choose to surrender to the authorities or be exiled. Exile, accomplished on the honor system, may seem like the easy way out, but relatives of the victim often waylaid the exile, who might have an "accident" on his way out of the country!
In my next book, CAPTURED BY DESIRE, Florie Gilder takes sanctuary in a church for a crime she didn't commit, and it's up to Rane MacAllister to see she doesn't escape, which leaves him at a harrowing impasse when he begins to fall in love with her.
I'll be posting to my website occasionally, but if you'd like more frequent contact...

Dear Friends, Fans, and Family,
Do you know why X = Kiss? In medieval times, the Cross was drawn on documents as a symbol of sincerity, similar to the concept of swearing on the Bible. A kiss would then be placed upon the Cross to verify that oath. With time and a lack of literacy, the Cross eventually became an X, and we still place it at the bottom of letters! (Nobody really knows why O = Hug.)
Remember, my next book, CAPTURED BY DESIRE, will come out under my new pen name, KIRA MORGAN!
