Foxglove and belladonna, which we recognize as digoxin and atropine, were prescribed for heart ailments. Clove oil was and is still employed as a toothache remedy. Poppy seeds, used for painkilling and anesthesia, are where we derive morphine. And we get aspirin from the same white willow bark used for medieval pain relief. A "pocket full of posies," however, probably never did much to prevent the plague!
I've been doing a lot of medical research myself in the last few weeks, working on a scene in an exciting novel that will be the origin story for my Warrior Maids of Rivenloch series, set in the Dark Ages. (I'm in the middle of setting a broken bone, so I'll let you know how it turns out!) I'm also taking a research trip to Denmark for the book. There I'll be seeing an outdoor performance of a Viking saga, visiting a ninth century replica village, and learning to sail a longship! If you friend me at Facebook, I plan to post photos throughout the month.
We have a winner...ROBYN MYERS placed the highest bid and won lunch for herself and a guest with historical romance authors Lauren Royal and me! The annual auction, sponsored by bestselling author Brenda Novak, helps fund diabetes research.
