Dear Friends, Fans, and Family,

Health care is in the headlines now.  But no matter what your opinion, trust me, you'd much rather be living in our times than in the Middle Ages when it comes to doctoring and medicine.  Early surgeons, usually monks who learned from the writings of Arab scholars, were actually fairly adept.  But in 1215, the Pope decreed that monks could no longer perform surgery, so peasants were forced to take matters into their own hands.  Treatments included bloodletting, life-threatening "dwales" or anesthetic potions, ritualistic spells, and surgery without anesthesia.

But there was also an impressive understanding of herbal medicines, some we still use today...

Foxglove and belladonna, which we recognize as digoxin and atropine, were prescribed for heart ailments.  Clove oil was and is still employed as a toothache remedy.  Poppy seeds, used for painkilling and anesthesia, are where we derive morphine.  And we get aspirin from the same white willow bark used for medieval pain relief.  A "pocket full of posies," however, probably never did much to prevent the plague!

I've been doing a lot of medical research myself in the last few weeks, working on a scene in an exciting novel that will be the origin story for my Warrior Maids of Rivenloch series, set in the Dark Ages.  (I'm in the middle of setting a broken bone, so I'll let you know how it turns out!)  I'm also taking a research trip to Denmark for the book.  There I'll be seeing an outdoor performance of a Viking saga, visiting a ninth century replica village, and learning to sail a longship!  If you friend me at Facebook, I plan to post photos throughout the month.

We have a winner...ROBYN MYERS placed the highest bid and won lunch for herself and a guest with historical romance authors Lauren Royal and me!  The annual auction, sponsored by bestselling author Brenda Novak, helps fund diabetes research.

Is your e-reader well-prepared for that get-away-from-it-all vacation?  Have a swashbuckling summer with my award-winning Knights of de Ware trilogy, MY CHAMPION, MY WARRIOR, and MY HERO, or take a medieval road trip with PASSION'S EXILE for Amazon Kindle or Barnes & Noble NOOK.  At just $3.99 per book, you can stock up on all of them!  If you're so far away from it all that there isn't an outlet or a charger in sight, PASSION'S EXILE is also available in trade paperback from Amazon or CreateSpace.

Stay tuned for the e-publication of my Warrior Maids of Rivenloch trilogy--LADY DANGER, CAPTIVE HEART, and KNIGHT'S PRIZE--and my soon-to-be-completed origin story!  If you want to ride along on my adventures, friend me on Facebook, follow me on Twitter, and check out my favorite stuff on Pinterest!

Writing stories to keep you up all night...
